- I used to like GVC modems because I found that their Canadian representative,
- Gentek Marketing, offered a level of service that I can't get from *any* othe
- modem company. However, GVC modems are basically just another Rockwell
- chipset in a box, especially since Rockwell released the 'total solution'
- chipsets and GVC stopped using SoftArt firmware. I have had problems with GVC
- modems not getting along with FAX software (no matter how many times I upgrade
- the software and the firmware in the modem), I've seen GVC modems that
- wouldn't connect to other GVC modems no matter what we tried, etc... and
- others have told me that they have not experienced the same exceptional
- service that I have.
-
- It is worth pointing out that, although you may never have heard of GVC, they
- have a huge share of the market because they manufacture a lot of OEM modems
- which are then sold under other labels. In particular, the Intel 14.4
- FAXmodems were simply GVC boards in an Intel case.
-
- I'd be cautious about buying any 28.8 modem that doesn't allow modulation
- firmware upgrades because the 28.8 arena is still evolving, but the GVC will
- probably do a decent job for you.
