  23. I used to like GVC modems because I found that their Canadian representative, 
  24. Gentek Marketing, offered a level of service that I can't get from *any* othe 
  25. modem company.  However, GVC modems are basically just another Rockwell 
  26. chipset in a box, especially since Rockwell released the 'total solution' 
  27. chipsets and GVC stopped using SoftArt firmware.  I have had problems with GVC 
  28. modems not getting along with FAX software (no matter how many times I upgrade 
  29. the software and the firmware in the modem), I've seen GVC modems that 
  30. wouldn't connect to other GVC modems no matter what we tried, etc... and 
  31. others have told me that they have not experienced the same exceptional 
  32. service that I have.

  34. It is worth pointing out that, although you may never have heard of GVC, they 
  35. have a huge share of the market because they manufacture a lot of OEM modems 
  36. which are then sold under other labels.  In particular, the Intel 14.4 
  37. FAXmodems were simply GVC boards in an Intel case.

  39. I'd be cautious about buying any 28.8 modem that doesn't allow modulation 
  40. firmware upgrades because the 28.8 arena is still evolving, but the GVC will 
  41. probably do a decent job for you.
